Washington, D.C. - A contract awarded to an Albany County company to update software used in providing information about chemical spills and other environmental hazards will, "improve safety procedures and response time, especially for smaller towns," said U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo.

The U.S. Department of Energy awarded a contract to the Albany County Research Corporation to support chemical spill activity at the National Spill Center in Nevada. The total cost of the contract is $508,795 and this year's installment is $101,839.

Using past experience at the Department of Energy site the Western Research Institute in Laramie developed the Palmtop Emergency Action for Chemicals (PEAC), a handheld system that provides emergency information about chemical spills and hazards.

The device currently stores information for 10,000 chemicals and their physical properties, as well as hazard ratings, respirator recommendations and suggestions for chemical protective clothing.

"Smaller towns that may have to wait for the arrival of emergency response teams would be able to obtain immediate information in crisis situations with the device," said Enzi.
